The art initiative at the new Cowichan District Hospital (Art@CDH) is the strategic integration of purpose-driven art to create a healing environment for patients, families, care staff and community members.

Worlds Beyond the Surface

Contemplative Art for Healthcare Environments

A Collaboration Grounded in Well-being - This project was made possible thanks to the donation of artistic rights and creative concepts by Marcia Aftimus.

The heart of this initiative is to bring peace to inner chaos through interactive painting.

Each artwork was intentionally conceived with hidden elements to be discovered. This feature serves as a Mindfulness tool, subtly inviting patients and family members to pause their suffering during challenging moments, in order to achieve a state of calm and serenity.

"People have shared how calming and peaceful it feels—some even saying they momentarily forgot their pain."

"Maureen McKay, Coordinator, Volunteer Resources at Cowichan Hospice Society.

Contemplation - Support for Adults

Beyond visual serenity, each work in this series invites a "conscious search." Hidden elements within the brushstrokes stimulate presence and focus, offering a gentle contemplative exercise that helps anchor the mind and provides a momentary refuge from physical or emotional discomfort.

Imagination - Support for Children

Designed to transform the hospital experience into an adventure, these works engage young patients through curiosity. Children are invited to find hidden characters, turning observation into active play. These designs can be applied as high-quality wall decals or individual paintings for each room. To complement the experience, matching coloring booklets with stories, puzzles and drawings are provided, offering a creative and therapeutic outlet for children during their stay

This project is flexible and can be customized to support the specific needs of your facility.
